2010 Season - Week 23
Building A Champion
As mentioned in a previous newsletter Johnnie is the first owner to win the Papas Fritas trophy with a team he did not draft. All 8 of his players were trading day pick ups. He did draft Brandon Marshall but cut him on both trading days before re-signing him. The 15 previous winning squads averaged over 5 drafted players. The previous low was in 2000 when Mark won the Premiership with just 2 players he drafted (Morten Andersen and Terrell Owens). In changing his entire team and lifting the Papas Fritas Trophy Johnnie has proved he is the master of Trading Day. He has used Trading Day 1 to great effect picking up Franchise players Aaron Rodgers in 2008 (pick 11) and Chris Johnson in 2009 (2nd Rnd), plus Arian Foster with pick 6 this year. Those 3 players accounted for over half of his teams points while he also signed Mike Tomlin (T1 Rnd 3), Mason Crosby (T1 Rnd 4) and on Trading Day 2 receivers Steve Johnson, Mario Manningham and Brandon Marshall in rounds 1,2 and 3 respectively. While Johnnie prospers others faulter as in each year other owners had the chance to take Rodgers, Johnson and Foster before Johnnie did.
Aaron Rodgers
In 2008 four other owners could have taken Rodgers before Johnnie. On Trading Day One with pick two Ron replaced David Garrard with Brett Favre, pick four saw Aaron sign Jay Cutler for the injured Tom Brady. Mark B signed Phillip Rivers for Jake Delhomme (pick 7) and with pick 9 AP dropped Derek Anderson for Donovan McNabb, then two picks later Johnnie replaced Marc Bulger with Rodgers. Though none of the other owners would have changed their fortunes by selecting Rodgers, without that change Johnnie would have been seventh in 2008 instead of third. Since Trading Day 1 in 2008 while Rodgers has scored 302 points for Johnnie, Rivers has scored 250, Cutler 224, McNabb 183 and Favre just 118.
Chris Johnson
On Trading Day One, 2009 Mark B. cut Johnson replacing him with Donald Brown. After that Brown scored 6 points while Johnson totalled 98. Mark was relegated at the end of the season but if he had kept Johnson he would have finished fifth. Johnnie picked up Johnson in the second round of Trading Day One, replacing Beenie Wells with him. That change improved Johnnie’s RB scores by 56 points, he won the league by 33. Prior to Johnnie selecting Johnson, George, Aaron and AP all had a chance to pick up the Titan. With pick 4 of the first round George replaced James Stewart with Cedric Benson, two picks later Aaron selected Willis McGahee to replace Willie Parker and with pick 13 of the first round AP cut Steven Jackson and signed Rashard Mendenhall. Since Trading Day One 2009 Johnson has scored 170 points for Johnnie, Mendenhall 108, Benson 68, McGahee 66 while Mark’s replacement Donald Brown has totalled just 18 points – ouch!
